Monsanto Found Guilty of Chemical Poisoning

16 February 2012

US & FRANCE - A French court has found US agricultural company Monsanto guilty of the chemical poisoning of a farmer.

The ruling could strengthen future health claims against pesticides.

Grain grower Paul Francois, 47, claims he suffered neurological problems such as memory loss, headaches and stammering after inhaling Monsanto's Lasso weedkiller in 2004. Mr Francois said that the poisoning left him unable to work for a year and blamed Monsanto for 'not providing adequate warnings on product labels'.

The ruling was given by a court in Lyon, southeast France, with Monsanto declaring they were disappointed by the decision and may examine whether to appeal the ruling.
