Excess Ukrainian Sugar Available for Biofuel Use

29 March 2012

UKRAINE - Restrictions on export of Ukrainian sugar to the Customs Union countries and an increase in the production of sugar beets last year triggered an excess of these products, but Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk states excess sugar should be used for biofuel production.

"We are completing negotiations with Bangladesh and other countries regarding the sale of sugar. We also plan to reduce imports and use sugar substitutes, since it harms not only the sugar industry, but also public health.

"In addition, one of the promising areas for the agricultural sector is the production of biofuels, including those from sugar beets," Minister Prysiazhniuk said.

Minister Prysiazhniuk recently made a working visit to Washington, where he held a meeting at the US Department of Agriculture, where, among other issues, the sides discussed prospects for biofuel production.
