Sugarcane Crop to Increase 5.4 Per Cent

BRAZIL - The 2012-2013 sugarcane crop in Brazil is expected to increase by 5.4 per cent, to reach 602.18 million tonnes, according to a survey conducted by the National Supply Company (Conab). In 2011-2012, 571.44 million tonnes were harvested.

According to the survey, average yield should increase by 2.9 per cent and the planted area should rise from 8.368 million to 8.567 million hectares compared to the last crop.

Sugar production should grow by approximately 5.34 per cent, from 36.88 million tonnes to 38.85 million tonnes. Ethanol production is expected to increase by 4.81 per cent compared with the 22.86 billion litres made from the preceding crop. The output is expected to reach 23.96 billion litres.

Production of anhydrous ethanol, which is made to be mixed with gasoline, should increase by 7.44 per cent and production of hydrated ethanol, for biofuel vehicles, should rise by 3.07 per cent.
