Record Sugar Production but Forecasts Down

18 April 2012
USDA Foreign Agricultural Service

RUSSIA - FAS Moscow’s record sugar production forecast fell far short in 2011/12 as sugar production totaled 58 per cent higher than the previous record and 84 per cent higher than the previous year.

In 2012/13, planted area is retreating but still allows for the second largest beet sugar production on record at over 5.0 MMT. Producer prices and adverse weather conditions in the South are driving reduced area.

As a result, 2012/13 imports should bounce back from the very low totals being experienced in the current marketing year.

Large sugar supplies in 2011/12 should allow Russia to become a net exporter of refined sugar for the first time since 2001/02 as well as carry this status forward into 2012/13.
