NFU Calling Future Crops Industry Leaders

UK - Up-and-coming arable farmers are being urged to take part in a new initiative aimed at supporting the emergence of industry leaders of the future.

The Cereals Development Programme, a joint initiative by the NFU and grain co-op Openfield, will give participants the chance to build on their understanding of UK supply chains and to gain real experience of different aspects of the arable sector.

NFU combinable crops board member Mark Leggott said it was a golden opportunity for anyone interested in combinable crops to understand how the sector worked and how to make it work better.

“We hope they will get involved and find out for themselves what happens when grain leaves the farm gate and why. I would urge anybody who wishes to find out more about their industry from plant breeding, crop protection through to end use, to apply for this scheme,” he added.

Tim Davies, Openfield group managing director, said: “As the UK’s leading farmer-owned arable business we are delighted to collaborate with the NFU in providing the chance for young farmers to gain a real understanding of our industry’s supply chain.

“I would like to encourage potential participants to take advantage of what should be a stimulating and broadening experience and I look forward to meeting them as they progress through the programme.”

It is hoped individuals will be able to build knowledge of the sector and provide an insight to the broader opportunities available to them within it, including the options to shape the industry through participation in arable organisations in the future.
