Brazil, Japan Work to Improve Soybean Tolerance

24 August 2012

BRAZIL & JAPAN - The Brazilian Agricultural Research (Embrapa) has signed an agreement with the Japanese International Centre for Research in Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS), to create the fifth Virtual Laboratory of Embrapa Abroad (Labex).

Located in Tsukuba, near Tokyo's technological city, the laboratory will be the pilot for the development of genetic engineering for soybeans tolerant to various stresses.

The project includes the development of genetic technology for crops with increased tolerance to environmental degradation.

Besides the use of specific genes and molecular tools for genetic improvement, Embrapa and JIRCAS will develop strategic studies for sustainable development of rural areas.
