CANADA - The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) has released the Winter Wheat Production Manual, a project originally spear-headed by the former Alberta Winter Wheat Producers Commission but handed over to the AWC’s Winter Wheat Class Advisory Committee for completion.

“We are very pleased to see the Winter Wheat Production Manual released,” says Rick Istead, general manager of the AWC. “The principles and advice throughout the manual are based on sound science. The manual covers key production practices such as seeding management, nutrient management, crop rotation and pest management.”

The manual also includes a calendar detailing key activities throughout the year which easily conveys what a producer needs to be aware of and doing such as optimum seeding time for different regions of the province.

“The key to a successful production manual for any wheat variety depends upon the scientific grounding upon which the manual is based, the attention to detail in covering various aspects of the growing cycle, and the collective experience of those producing the manual,” says Mr Istead.

The 75-page manual is designed in full colour with illustrative tables, charts, photos and other easily understood content. A copy may be downloaded from the Alberta Wheat Commission’s website. A Quick Reference Pocket Guide is currently in development.
