Estimates Confirm EU Rapeseed Production back to Normal Levels

27 December 2013

EU - New EU27 oilseeds estimates for the 2013/4 marketing year released by Copa-Cogeca confirm EU rapeseed production is back to normal levels this year, up 4.2 per cent on last years level.

The move came after Copa-Cogeca oilseeds working party assessed the market situation.

Chairing the meeting, Gerard Tubery from France said: “The figures show that total EU-27 oilseed production reached 30 390.8 mt in 2013/4 which is up 4.2 per cent on last years level.

"EU-27 rapeseed production is estimated to climb by 5.1 per cent to reach 20 928.2 mt. The sunflower crop meanwhile declined slightly by 0.6 per cent to 8292.9 mt."

Mr Tubery continued: "The good EU crop will help to ensure a good supply of protein for the EU livestock sector."

In the advisory group meeting with the EU Commission, Mr Tubery meanwhile outlined priorities for the protein crops sector which include research and innovation to develop the sector further.

Protein crops have many benefits in terms of reducing dependence on imported soybean, maintaining food security, and benefiting the environment.
