Water Supply Is Major Factor in Cropping Decision

26 February 2014

ANALYSIS - Corn is still king, but in some parts of the US farmers are leaning toward crop rotation to break up the amount of water that's needed, reports Sarah Mikesell, TheCropSite senior editor.

Mitchel Baalman, farmer in the High Plains of northwest Kansas, said they are implementing a water strategy to use only 55 inches of water over 5 years, so averaging 11 inches a year.

His strategy is to rotate corn, wheat and milo in order to limit water use and manage weed and insect pressure.

Sarah Mikesell is reporting live from Ag Issues Forum in San Antonio, Texas. The forum is hosted by Bayer CropScience in order to bring thought-provoking issues to the forefront of agriculture.
