India Oilmeal Exports Down 11 Per Cent

30 April 2014

INDIA - India has recorded an 11 per cent drop in oilmeal exports to 4.33 million tonnes for the 2013-14 financial year ended.

During the same period last year, oil meal exports were recorded at 4.84 million tonnes, Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), a body representing vegetable oil industry & trade said in a statement recently.

The body attributed negative growth to reduced export quantity by 501,000 tonnes during the period.

In value terms, total earning was also marginally down by 3 per cent to $1.89 billion, as compared to $1.93 billion in 2012-13. However in dollar terms the total earning was recorded at $1.87 billion in 2013-14, against $2.18 billion in 2012-13, down by 14 per cent, SEA statement adds.

The association said that export to Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia drastically reduced due to disparity in exports in these regions against severe competition from other origins including China and Argentina.

Japan imported 245,991 tonnes, as compared to 638,201 tonnes during 2012-13 consisting of 7,525 tonnes of rapeseed meal, 1,062 tonnes of castor meal and 237,404 tonnes of soybean meal, SEA statement said.

Indonesia imported 136,573 tonnes, against 201,999 tonnes of last year consisting 46,855 tonnes of rapeseed meal, 89,608 tonnes of soybean meal and 110 tonnes of castor meal. Indonesian end users prefer high pro with low fiber4% against 6% supplied by India.

Vietnam imported 205,724 tonnes, as compared to 699,791 tonnes last year consisting of 29,796 tonnes of rapeseed meal, 797 tonnes of castor meal, 1,344 tonnes of groundnut meal, 82,777 tonnes of soybean meal and 91,010 tonnes of rice bran extraction.

India is losing Vietnam market due to stiff competition from other origins and increased availability from domestic crushing, SEA adds.

However, overall export of rapeseed meal from South Korea during the period increased, whereas exports to Middle East and African countries increased to 1.42 million tonnes, against 1.22 million tonnes, due to continuous buying from Iran, the association said.

South Korea imported 1.16 million tonnes of oilmeal, as compared to 907,082 tonnes during 2012-13, consisting of 516,230 tonnes of rapeseed meal, 496,138 tons of castor meal and 152,739 tons of soybean meal.
