Karnataka to Set up Two Agri Universities

INDIA - University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) Bangalore, a premier institution of agricultural education and research in Karnataka will be setting up two agriculture universities in the state.

UAS along with its partner, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FKCCI) will collaborate with US based Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University, a public research university located in College Station foe setting up the Centre for Excellence in Food Development in Bagalkot and the International Centre for Agriculture Development in Dharwad.

These two universities will focus on providing better opportunities to agriculturalists and reach out to associated industries.

Speaking with reporter after meeting with state chief minister, Siddaramaiah, Texas Agriculture and Mechanical University interim president, Mark A Hussey, said that the initiative would provide immense learning opportunities for both the United States and India. In the long term it will help in addressing agriculture and food-related issues in countries in South Asia and Africa as well.

“Most importantly, the programme will help the students of these universities in ensuring that their products and knowledge reach the market and benefit more people,” Hussey said.

This comes at the time when a memorandum of understanding between the University of Agricultural Sciences and the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University is completing 12 years.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Dr D P Biradar said, “This is a step towards expanding and exploring what we can do for each other.”
