India’s Kharif Sowing Area Crosses 70.6 MH

INDIA - India’s kharif season sowing has crossed 70.6 million hectares, the Indian agriculture ministry said in a statement.

“It is reported that as on August 1, 2014, rice has been sown/transplanted in 22.15 million hectares, pulses in 6.71 million hectares, coarse cereals in 12.07 million hectares and oilseeds in 13.73 million hectares,” the statement adds.

The planting of sugarcane and cotton is also in progress. Sugarcane has been planted in 4.64 million hectares and cotton in 10.48 million hectares as on August 1, 2014.
