Punjab to Host Commonwealth Meet on Agriculture30 September 2014
INDIA - London-based Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has selected Punjab state to host its workshop of Parliamentary Agriculture Committees.
The meet scheduled to be held from October 29 to 31 will have delegates from six countries which includes Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Malaysia and Singapore.
Apart from delegates from foreign countries, Indian lower house (Lok Sabha) speaker and speakers from all states along with agriculture experts would also participate in the three-day event.
Charnjit Singh Atwal, speaker of Punjab assembly while chairing a high-level meeting to review preparedness for the conference said that the aim of hosting this mega workshop was to give a big push to parliamentary agriculture committees besides strengthening those vis-a-vis holding discussions and debate on current issues pertaining to peasantry and agriculture.
Capacity-building in the area of agriculture amongst parliamentarians will also be an issue during this three-day workshop and the participants they would share their experience in the agriculture sector besides possibilities of agri-growth in their respective regions, Atwal adds.
UK based CPA has branches in 175 national, state, provincial and territorial parliaments with a total membership of approximately 17,000 parliamentarians in Africa; Asia; Australia; British Islands and Mediterranean; Canada; Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic; India; Pacific and South-East Asia.
