EU - Prices for maize delivered to Rotterdam (a key commodities hub of the EU) have maintained a discount to feed wheat and feed barley for the second consecutive week - but only just, reports Dr Amandeep Purewal, Senior Analyst, AHDB/HGCA.
Harvest pressure is a key factor that has led the gap between maize and feed wheat/barley prices to narrow; maize is now at a €2/t discount to feed wheat/barley.
Once the EU has fully gathered its forecast record breaking maize crop, then competition for animal feed demand between these three contenders will begin in earnest.
From a UK perspective, this illustrates the need for feed wheat and barley to be competitive to avoid maize imports.
It also shows the challenge of exporting feed grains into Europe this season.
