Higher than Expected Maize Imports in November

UK - The latest UK trade data released by HMR&C for November again showed strong maize imports (231Kt), bringing the season to date total to just over 717Kt.

While just below the cumulative volume of maize imported at the same point last year, expectations were that the demand for maize, particularly for animal feed, would reduce this season owing to the competitive price for UK feed wheat and considering the large surplus of UK wheat available for export. The graph below helps to show how large the cumulative total of maize imports are historically.

Despite wheat exports declining in November by 12Kt compared with October, the UK continued to be a net exporter of wheat, with monthly exports totalling 206Kt and imports of 83Kt.

November saw the lowest volume of wheat imported since February 2014. However, for the season as a whole (Jul-Nov), imports still exceed exports, suggesting that the pace of the export campaign still needs to pick up.
