UKRAINE - Moderate temperatures and recent rainfall have boosted the outlook for crops for harvest 2015 in Ukraine with production forecasts raised as a result.
The Agricultural Ministry now projects total grain production at 60Mt, up by 2Mt from earlier forecasts, but below the 63.8Mt of 2014. Half of the recent increase in the 2015 grain production forecast can be attributed to wheat, production of which is projected at 21Mt (USDA: 22Mt).
Winter crop development is generally estimated to be 3-5 days ahead of average, with key moisture sensitive development stages commencing. Winter wheat is predicted to start ‘ear formation’ in 7-10 days.
The country is forecasted to remain an important player in wheat export markets next season, accounting for nearly 7 per cent of global exports (USDA) – only slightly down on this season.
As a result, crop conditions in the country will remain under scrutiny in the weeks ahead, with the political situation adding additional risk.
