Crop Increase Project Underway

04 February 2010

CUBA - Agricultural and forest technicians in Cuba are working with food producers to increase crops and reduce the amount imported.

They are working to apply best practice experiences, technologies and techniques in agriculture, Jorge Delgado, leader of the association that groups workers in these sectors, told the Cuban News Agency.

Efforts to increase crop production will be based on the specific characteristics in each territory, with the workers' association essential to the success of integrated programmes of crops, reforesting cattle breeding and apiculture, Mr Delgado continued.

Cuban agricultural experts are working with others from 12 countries on international initiatives to fulfil agricultural development aims.

Fruit harvesters in the province of Ciego de Avila are already celebrating successful crop yields as part of a national programme set to run for the next five years, Cuba Headlines reported.

With more than 2,400 hectares of fruit trees sowed last year, 208 per cent of the plan has been fulfilled.
