Rice Farmers Call for Government Aid

22 April 2010

THAILAND - Rice farmers in Thailand are calling on the government to provide immediate help as they face lower returns on their crops.

Domestic prices have fallen on higher output and foreign importers are holding back on purchases in the hope that the trend will continue, the Bangkok Post reported.

Without new measures, there will be further falls, Prasit Boonchuey, president of the Thai Farmers Association told the news provider.

The group is urging the government to increase benchmark prices based on current market levels.

Local milled rice has fallen from 19,000 baht (£383) a tonne in December to 11,800 baht.

Earlier this week, farmers threatened to rally at the Ministry of Commerce if the government does not increase the guaranteed price for rice.
