Agricultural Growth 'Would Transform Economy'

28 April 2010

ETHIOPIA - A six per cent growth rate in agricultural gross domestic product would provide an increase in employment for Ethiopia.

This would contribute to a "rapid economic transformation" of the economy and "rapid decline" in poverty, according to the Ethiopia Strategy Support Program 2 report from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

"The low level of crop yields relative to those of other countries with comparable resources, and relative to best farmers and experiment stations, suggest the potential for that growth rate," it stated.

Furthermore, growth already seen in the past few years in level and changing sources of development are consistent with achieving this goal, the IFPRI continued.

It called on the government to boost seed production and fertiliser use to help achieve growth in Ethiopia's agriculture sector.

The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research is currently working in Ethiopia to address food availability and help boost crop production.
