Rice Farmers Asked To Delay Sowing

07 June 2010

THAILAND – It has been requested that farmers in Thailand postpone the sowing of certain rice crops due to serious water supply issues, a newspaper has reported.

According to the Bangkok Post, the country's department of irrigation has asked farmers living in the Chao Phraya Basin area to delay the planting of in-season or floating rice crops for a month because of a critical water shortage.

Maitree Pitinanon, Ayutthaya's royal irrigation project director, has told the paper that growers should not begin sowing before July.

He said: "Rain has started falling over the past couple of days because of a low pressure system, but farmers should wait for more rain before sowing their crop."

Mr Pitinanon added that water levels in the country's dams are not currently sufficient to be released for farming purposes.

Meanwhile, in Vietnam, a nine-year water management project has been proving its worth to the country's rice production industry, according to local newspaper Vietnam News.

The North Vam Nao Water Control Project aims to establish and operate an integrated water management system that is sustainable and reduces poverty, the paper reported.
