Sugar Forecasts Trimmed By Dry Weather
15 July 2010
THAILAND – Sugar production in Thailand is expected to drop as low as six million tonnes in the 2010/11 season because of severe droughts, an official has said.
Rangsit Hiangrat, director of the Office of Cane and Sugar Board, told the news provider that the country's output next year could be significantly down from the 6.9 million tonnes expected in the 2009/10 season.
He said: "I think the worst figure we expect to have is 60 million tonnes of cane because of a very serious drought. This is about six million to 6.2 million tonnes of sugar."
Mr Hiangrat added that, although the country is now seeing plenty of rain, wet weather simply did not arrive early enough for ideal cane growth.
Earlier this month, Agrimoney.com reported that a prolonged dry spell in Thailand had dealt a serious blow the country, with potential losses of one million tonnes predicted for this year's output.
