Farm Restructuring Programme 'Taking Off'
26 July 2010
THAILAND – The Agriculture Ministry for Thailand has stepped up the efforts of a restructuring scheme that could lead to better farm zoning for food and fuel crops across the Asian nation, it has been reported.
According to the Bangkok Post, the plans will initially focus on 20 designated 'farm estates', in which essential facilities and harvest management services will be provided to improve productivity and promote sustainable farming.Apichart Jongskul, secretary general of the country's Office of Agriculture Economics, told the news provider that the programme would provide basic infrastructure such as proper irrigation and the use of quality seeds.
He said: "Farm estates will be a prototype for future Thai farming that utilise management, technology and marketing to support farmers. We not only expect to see about a 20 rise in production from the area but hope that the pattern, if succesper centsful, would induce more young people to work in the farm sector."
Last week, Bloomberg reported that prices of rice in Thailand, which sets the benchmark for all of Asia, had continued a four-week decline - dragging them to their lowest levels in more than two years.
