Insects 'A Threat To Rice Production'
25 August 2010
THAILAND – Rice experts in the Asian nation of Thailand have warned that a significant rise in the number of brown hoppers, a common rice pest, in central areas of the country, could soon begin to affect production.
According to IRIN News, light traps are being used to measure population levels of migrating hoppers, with an average trap yielding a nightly average of between 15 and 20 hoppers.Dr Kong Luen Heong, an insect ecologist from the International Rice Research Institute, told the news provider that during current migration peaks, this number can rise to as many as 2,000 insects each night.
"The current situation is not good. Looking at the number of hoppers caught in light traps over the last two months, it's clear that a massive immigration has occurred," he said.
Meanwhile, it is thought that Vietnam will export around 1.8 million tonnes of rice in the third quarter of 2010, contributing strongly to the country's 2010 export target of 6.5 million tonnes.
