Flash Floods May Reduce Rice Yields
20 October 2010
THAILAND – Concerns have been raised that flash floods in Thailand could reduce the country's rice production by as much as 20 per cent.
Bloomberg reported that the nation, which is the world's biggest rice exporter, could see a significant reduction in yields as a result of heavy precipitation across the country.Banjong Tungjitwattanakun, vice president of the Thai Rice Mills Association, said: "Production of main crop rice may fall by around 15 to 20 per cent from last year, to less than 20 million metric tons."
According to data from Thailand's Agricultural Economics Office, last year's main rice crop output totalled 23.3 million tonnes for the country.
Last week, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported that rice crops in the US could be more than ten per cent lower than predicted.
The US Rice Producers Association told the publication that the shortfall in rice crops could cause futures to jump as high as $16 (£10.09) to $17 per 100 pounds.
