Sugar Exports Could Drop By 20%
25 October 2010
THAILAND – Wet weather in Thailand could cause sugar exports to drop by 20 per cent in 2010 to 2011, US officials have predicted.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Bangkok said that shipments from the Asian country, which is the world's second-largest exporter, will fall 500,000 tonnes to 4.7 million tonnes in 2010-2011, Agrimoney.com reported.Sales to India, which has a major import agreement with Thai sugar producers, are expected to drop as a result of hopes for improved yields in the country, and may impact on export levels.
In addition, Thailand's stocks have been significantly depleted by increasing sales, and recent weather conditions have dampened production expectations.
The USDA bureau also cut its production forecast for Thailand by 280,000 to 6.87 million tonnes.
Sugar production levels have been lower than expected in a number of countries, including Fiji, where cane crushing activity was halted earlier this month as a result of low crop yields, according to the Fiji Times.
