Russian Harvest to Reach 90 Million Tonnes

28 September 2011

RUSSIA - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has declared that the country is now seeing an upturn in its agriculture industry following two years of droughts and heat waves.

Speaking to a meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Federation said the harvest is expected to reach 90 million tonnes.

"I recall that last year we had 61 million and the year before was a little more, I think, 96 million, but 90 - is a very good indicator of the result," said Mr Putin.

He said that the volumes will not only satisfy domestic demand, but will also bring Russia back as leaders in the export of grain.

He said the results had been achieved by the hard work of the rural communities backed by the government.

"We have helped many households not only in the current work, but also helped them to maintain growth potential - development is very important," he said.

Federal support for agriculture in 2011 was increased to record levels - 163 billion rubles and the draft budge for next year has earmarked 170 billion rubles in support.

He said the government needs to improve the mechanisms of support for agriculture in the Russian Federation and the government is now laying down future plans for the sector starting from 2013.
