Yuma Exploring Sugar Cane as New Crop

22 November 2011

US - The fields near Yuma, Arizona may soon hold a new crop. Sugar cane is an exploratory crop in Yuma County and could be used for the production of biofuels.

Sugar cane is one of the top producers of biofuel. It is heavily grown in Brazil, where over 45 per cent of the world's ethanol is produced, reports YumaSun.

The perennial grass is generally grown using flood irrigation, which could be a challenge in the desert, but drip irrigation could drastically reduce the amount of water used.

Sugar, which we now consider a staple, was once so rare and expensive it was called white gold. Sugar cane, the first source of sugar, is a perennial grass that originated in Asia.
