Kendall Questions OFC Panel

04 January 2012

UK - NFU President Peter Kendall has questioned a panel of politicians and experts on the profile of GM foods at the Oxford Farming Conference.

Mr Kendall addressed Jospeph Glauber, Chief Economist at the US Department of Agriculture), Agricultural Minsiter Jim Paice, Sion Roberts of EFFP and Mary Creagh, Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

After publicly thanking Jim Paice for the work he carried out before Christmas on the TB trials, Mr Kendall asked: "What leadership can Jim or Mary give the biotech industry, how can we explain the benefits of this technology to consumers?"

Jim Paice replied: "Biotechnology is not a panacea but has to be one of the tools at our disposal. Public opinion is very important and I believe the supermarkets have a big role to play in consumer understanding of GM foods. I'd like to see EU regulations changed so we can use this technology where appropriate."
