Soybeans:

During the past month, there has been enough rainfall over the majority of the soybean growing region to replenish dry soils and bring moisture levels back up. This will put the breaks on some of the damage done by the dry weather and high temperatures during December and January. However, there are still areas in western and southern parts of the Buenos Aires province, where the majority of the second crop soybean is planted, that are still suffering from dry conditions. Some of the second crop soybeans planted in these areas will not recover while some were never planted to begin with. The onset of excess moisture could cause problems with weeds, fungus and insects. This is already being seen in many areas were producers are taking control measures by applying fungicides and insecticides. FAS Buenos Aires maintains its area estimate at 20.3 million hectares with production at 54 million metric tons (MMT). The Ministry of Agriculture estimates soybean area for MY2013/14 at 20.3 million hectares and the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange estimates area at 20.35 million hectares.

Sunflowerseed:

Sunflowerseed area and production for MY2013/14 is maintained at 1.45 million hectares and 2.3 MMT respectively. According to the Ministry of Agriculture’s February 20, 2014 weekly report, 25 percent of the sunflower area has been harvested (compared to 37 percent harvested at the same time last year). Harvest is taking longer this year due to the excess moisture in many fields. Furthermore, there are many reports of pigeon and parrot invasions that will negatively impact yields. The longer the matured seeds sit in the field waiting for harvest, the worse the damage will be. The Ministry of Agriculture estimates area at 1.25 million hectares and production at 2 MMT and the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange maintains its area estimate at 1.48 million hectares with production reaching 2.3 MMT.
