Pakistan Government Approves Sugar Exports for First Time Since 2009

06 February 2012

PAKISTAN - Pakistan has approved the export of sugar for the first time in almost three years. The exports were approved due to an expected surplus of more than 1 million tonnes.

After sugar production fell to 3.1 million tonnes in 2009, Pakistan was forced to import around 1 million tonnes in 2010.

The government has approved the export of 100,000 tonnes of white sugar, however the terms of the exports have yet to be decided.

Pakistani millers sought government permission in 2011 to export 500,000 tonnes of refined sugar after a higher than average crop.

It is expected that most of the sugar will be exported to Afghanistan.
