China's First GMO Corn Expected in 2013

28 February 2012

CHINA - Agricultural biotechnology company, Origin Agritech Ltd. has announced that they expect the Chinese government to approve its genetically modified (GM) corn for production next year.

The approval of the GM corn would be the first strain in commercial production in China.

The GM corn, which includes the beneficial enzyme Phytase was given approval in 2009. Initially scientists predicted large scale production could happen by 2012, but complications during the approval process delayed their projection.

As China's growing meat consumption drives more corn imports, the Beijing-based company is working on the biosafety approval for the other two strains of GMO corn, the glyphosate tolerance and insect-resistant.
