NFU Responds to 'Mega Farms' Claims

20 June 2012

UK - NFU President Peter Kendall has clarified the NFU's view of large-scale farming techniques, responding to recent reports in the media that the NFU endorses 'mega farms'.

In a video interview shot on the family farm in Bedfordshire, Mr Kendall said: "This issue has been blown out of proportion in the press over the past week or so. We want more food consumed by the British public produced here in the UK."

"I remain concerned that our self-sufficiency continues to decline - we are now 62 per cent self-sufficient in indigenous foods. What I was talking about was one or two farms dipping their toes in the water, which could be monitored to see if they were better for greenhouse gas emissions, how they perform in terms of animal welfare, and other similar questions. It's not how we see the future of farming developing but we do want to see us reduce the decline in domestic production." Mr Kendall said.
