Colombia Agriculture Minister Highlights Importance of Grain Security

COLOMBIA - Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Juan Camilo Restrepo Salazar has highlighted the significant results in implementing the plans to reduce imports of grain and strengthen food security in Colombia.

Colombia is focussing it's efforts on providing quality corn for domestic consumption and declining the need for imports.

In 2011 Colombia was able to increase it's corn area by 29 per cent, production increased 37 per cent and imports of yellow and white corn were reduced by 22 per cent.

The total consumption of maize in Colombia exceeds four million tons valued at $400 million thousand.

The country's consumption in 2011 was covered by 29 per cent domestically, an increase from 21 per cent in 2010.

Maize production in Colombia has increased by almost 35 per cent throughout January and February this year.

Colombia plans to increase corn hectares to 250,000 by 2014, producing 500,000 tons for domestic production.
