China Sugar Production to Rise by 22 Per Cent in 2012/13

27 September 2012

CHINA - Sugar production in 2012/13 (Sep/Aug) is forecast to reach 14 million tonnes, white value, up 22 per cent year-on-year. Higher prices have prompted farmers to raise the area under sugar crops with another boost coming from favourable weather conditions, Liu Hande, the vice chairman of the China Sugar Association said.

By 2014/15 China targets sugar production of 16 million tonnes which would be enough to cover around 85 per cent of the country's sugar demand, reports Black Sea Grain.

Consumption in 2012/13 is forecast to reach 14 million tonnes, matching supplies. Sugar stocks by the end of the 2012/13 crushing season will reach 5.7 million tonnes, up one million tonnes from the inventory levels seen one year earlier.
