Downward Revision of South Korean Rice Production

29 November 2012
USDA Foreign Agricultural Service

SOUTH KOREA - The USDA has revised South Korea's estimated rice production downward to 4 million tonnes, from it's initial estimate of 4.1 million tonnes.

This latest revision represents a drop of 5.2 per cent compared to last year. The decrease is a result of a combination of unfavourable weather and a steady decline in acreage planted. According to the USDA's Republic of Korea Rice Production Revision, Korean rice production remains at its lowest point in more than three decades.

Based on the results of a survey conducted last November, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries acknowledged that the current average milling rate (paddy to milled) is too high. The Ministry is considering lowering it from 74 per cent to 72 per cent to reflect current production practices.
