Minister Works to Stop Rice Smuggling

27 February 2013

PHILIPPINES - Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala has signed an agreement which aims to stop the smuggling of agricultural produce especially rice in the country.

The agreement was signed during a dialogue with the rice industry's multi-sectoral group held at the Philippine Coconut Authority Executive Hall, 21 February, 2013.

The group led by Nueva Ecija 2nd District Representative Joseph Gilbert Violago aired their issues and concerns on the influx of imported rice in the market.

In support of the DA’s rice sufficiency programme, rice millers and other industry stakeholders agreed to work hand in hand with the Department of Agriculture, National Food Authority (NFA) and the Bureau of Customs to protect the country's farmers and other stakeholders by effectively monitoring and stopping the entry of smuggled rice and other farm products into the country.
