New Organic Logo Unveiled

09 February 2010

EU – The European Commission (EC) has unveiled its new logo, aimed at enabling consumers to see which products are genuinely organic.

Towards the start of last year, the EC called on art students across the continent to submit designs for the new logo, with the brief being that it had to be universally recognisable yet effectively depict the diverse aspects of the organic farming industry.

Now, on the back of the votes of around 125,000 European Union (EU) citizens, the commission has unveiled the winning entry, a leaf image made up of stars.

Launching it, EU agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said: "It's a nice elegant design and I look forward to buying products carrying this logo from July this year."

However, certain members of the agricultural industry have already expressed their dismay at the choice, with the Farmers Guardian reporting the UK certification body Organic Farmers and Growers has branded it as "dull and uninformative".

The winning design was drawn up by an art student from Germany and won 63 per cent of the recent public vote.
