Ian Backhouse Re-elected Combinable Crops Board Chairman

17 March 2010

UK - Ian Backhouse, chairman of the North East combinable crops board, has been re-elected as national combinable crops board chairman for a second term in office and Mark Leggott, from the East Midlands, was elected as vice chairman for the national board. Both will serve a two year term.

Mr Backhouse said: “I intend to build now on the good work with our customers, in particular moving to secure a means for sharing information up and down the supply chain to the benefit of farmers and our customers.

"I will be pressing for a worthwhile and workable CAP reform in the UK and Brussels as well as the implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive, protection of farmers’ rights and investment in plant breeding in any new proposals for seeds legislation. I am delighted with the result and look forward to working with Mark and the Board.”

Mr Leggott, the newly appointed vice chairman, said: “There are a number of challenges ahead in looking forward to a vibrant viable future in a profitable combinable crops sector including the Sustainable Use Directive and Water Framework Directive. I plan on working hard to get the best result for our sector on renewables, particularly British sourced biofuel and biomass as an essential and increasingly important part of agriculture.”
