China Donates Rice and Flour to Mongolia

19 March 2010

CHINA - China has donated 300 tonnes of rice and flour to help herders in the south-west of Mongolia as they suffer a harsh winter.

The Xinhua news agency said that the offerings are to help owners of the killed livestock, which the United Nations (UN) estimates to be 2.7 million animals.

It added that the offering is worth around $100,000 (£66,000) at current market values.

A handover ceremony was held when the rice was received, after China drove it in nine trucks through the Xinjiang region to the Takixken border checkpoint, Xinhua stated.

The UN also recently launched a $4 million appeal to help the people in Mongolia and to clear up the animals killed by the freeze in the country.

It will pay nomads to collect the carcasses in order to stop land and soil being infected and further agricultural problems being created.

The country has already faced drought this summer, followed by snow and freezing conditions this winter.
