Shortage of Farm Workers to Continue

18 August 2010

AUSTRALIA – New research has found that the agricultural sector is short of at least 96,000 full-time and around 10,000 part-time workers.

According to ABC, a survey by the Australian Farm Institute has revealed that the labour shortage may continue throughout the next ten years unless action is taken.

Mick Keogh, executive director of the group, told the news provider that one of the major problems facing the industry is its public image.

"We do as an industry have to recognise that if the only news that ever makes the front page in the city is in a disaster," he said.

He went on to say that this can have "long-term implications", suggesting that more should be done to communicate the prospects of being a farm worker.
