National Sorghum Foundation Awards Scholarships

24 September 2010

US - The National Sorghum Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2010 Sorghum Challenge Scholarship and the Darrell T. Rosenow Memorial Scholarship.

Laura Zimmerer, a senior food science and technology major at Texas A&M University, is this year's recipient of the Sorghum Challenge Scholarship.

Zimmerer grew up on her family's sorghum farm in North Texas where she developed an interest in the field of food science.

She plans to attend graduate school to obtain her master’s degree in food science, and hopes to use her experience in that discipline to develop new grain products.

This is the first year for the National Sorghum Foundation to award the Darrell T. Rosenow Memorial Scholarship.

Rosenow was a leader in sorghum research and was an internationally known scientist from Texas A&M University.

The Foundation said it is proud to honour his legacy by awarding this new scholarship to Elizabeth Elmore, a junior agronomy major at Kansas State University.

Elmore plans to pursue graduate work focusing on drought tolerance breeding and cropping systems dynamics. Elmore had three years of experience in agricultural research prior to pursuing her degree and currently works in plant breeding and pathology for the USDA while completing her college coursework.

"We are pleased to honor these outstanding students who have shown great interest in the future of the sorghum industry," said Bruce Maunder, president of the National Sorghum Foundation.

"Scholarships recognizing today's student leaders become the seeds that will produce continued accomplishments as they pursue their chosen careers in agriculture."

The National Sorghum Foundation was created to promote research and education for sorghum and develop the leadership potential of active university students interested in studying agriculture and more specifically the sorghum industry. The Foundation represents those who have dedicated themselves to a level of commitment and excellence that far exceeds most individuals.
