Locust Watch Intensifies In Victoria

08 November 2010

AUSTRALIA – Victorian locust control officials are bracing themselves for a busy period as the weather improves in the state over the next few days.

ABC News reported that authorities working from the Tatura Incident Control Centre are increasing surveillance around Echua.

Incident manager, Brendan Roughead, said that wet weather had made pest control acitivity difficult, but that he now expected more hatchings as the locusts reach the second and third instar stage.

Mr Roughead added: "It's an ideal opportunity for farmers to be preparing for locusts, to be checking with their agronomists and chemical sellers about treatment options so that they're ready to spray when conditions are right."

He added that aerial locust spraying will start near Deniliquin this weekend, with more favourable weather conditions forecast.
