Call for Action on Drought

17 June 2011

U.K - Shadow DEFRA secretary Mary Creagh has spoken out to increase reassurance from the government to farmers affected by the spring drought.

Stating the government needs to "get a grip," Mary Creagh made the statement after the NFU warned that England faces one of the worst wheat harvests since the 1980s following the unexpected dry spring.

The NFU's forecast based on members suggest the wheat harvest will be down by 14 per cent on average, with some farmers reaping just as little as 6.5t/ha.

"Families are already feeling the squeeze from rising food prices, which last month hit a two-year high," said Ms Creagh.

Mary Creagh was met with response by Cabinet minister Lord Taylor of Holbeach, whom acknowledged the "vital link" between water resources and food production and stated that the global views on droughts should apply equally in the U.K.
