Kenya Approves Production and Import of GMOs

11 July 2011

KENYA - Kenya becomes the fourth country in Africa to approve laws allowing the production and importation of genetically modified foods.

In a legal notice, acting Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Hellen Sambili says the law will end restrictions on GM maize and other products.

Other countries that have allowed the production of GMOs in Africa are South Africa, Egypt and Burkina Faso.

The move has however been termed as unconstitutional by activists against the introduction of GMOs.
