New Malting Plant will Encourage More Barley Crops

25 November 2011

AUSTRALIA - The demand for malting barley from Queensland and northern NSW has doubled with the opening of a new plant in Brisbane.

ABC reports that it owned by the GrainCorp subsidiary Barrett Burston Malting.

Spokesman David Ginns says agents will start talking to farmers about growing more barley next season.

He says the malting facility will supply local and Asian breweries.

"It's over $80 million of investment that we've brought to south-east Queensland and it gives us 86,000 tonnes of capacity," he said.

"Now half of that is going to be supplied to CUB and the other half is going to be focused on the export sector."
