Agricultural operating surplus estimated to increase by 2.0% in 2013

The CSO’s first estimate of operating surplus in agriculture in 2013 shows an annual increase of 2.0%. This follows a decrease of 8.5% in 2012. The estimate for 2013 is based on the data currently available for the year. See table 1.

Comparing 2013 with 2012 shows the following changes in estimated value:

  • Goods output at producer prices increased by 5.7% or €385.2m, to reach €7,101m
  • Milk output increased by 25.5% or €416.1m
  • Cattle output increased by 1.1% or €22.3m
  • Pigs output increased by 7.8% or €34.7m
  • Cereals output decreased by 32.4% or €109.2m
  • Total intermediate consumption increased by 3.8% or €200.7m
  • Feeding stuffs increased by 9.9% or €142.7m

The value of subsidies less taxes on production is estimated to have decreased by 8.1% from €1,667m in 2012 to €1,533m for 2013. Note this figure includes subsidies already paid and those scheduled to be paid by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine by year end.
